THE MOST COMMON EMERGENCIES IN FERRETS
Abstract
D omestic ferrets (lat. Mustela putorius furo) are members of the carnivore order, which in nature are predators similar to cats and dogs. As with other animals, success in emergency veterinary care begins with triage. After initial triage and stabilisation of the ferret, further investigation is required to determine the cause of the presenting symptoms. It should be borne in mind that middle-aged to older ferrets very often suffer from multiple comorbidities simultaneously, which should be taken into consideration when treating them as an emergency patient.
The most common symptoms presented as an emergency are digestive symptoms (acute vomiting), neurological symptoms (seizures), urinary symptoms (inability to urinate) and respiratory symptoms (heart disease), but also conditions such as anaphylactic reactions following vaccination, lethargy due to anaemia, endocrinopathy and neoplasia.Key words: ferret, stabilisation, emergency, triage
